Particle Image Velocimetry (PIV) for Granular Avalanches on Inclined Planes
نویسنده
چکیده
This paper is concerned with experimental results of sand avalanches flowing down inclined plexiglass chutes with lateral confinement. Specifically we introduce the particle image velocimetry (PIV) technique for granular avalanches. We discuss the differences and problems in comparison with “usual” PIV. After this, we present surface and side velocity measurements that are obtained at different chute locations and for four different inclination angles. It is found that the PIV-system provides a good measuring technique to determine flow velocities of granular avalanches. Furthermore, we found that the flow behaviour for the smallest investigated inclination angle deviates significantly from the other results: a terminal velocity is found. This gives valuable indications for the right choice of a bed friction law.

متن کاملVelocity measurement of near-wall flow over inclined and curved boundaries by extended interfacial particle image velocimetry
Particle image velocimetry (PIV) measurements near a curved boundary usually require efforts to deal with low tracer density, high shear gradient andwall reflection. To resolve these difficulties, we presented a near-wall measurement technique named interfacial PIV (IPIV) that could return a tangential velocity component and a tangential component of wall gradient [Nguyen TD, Wells J, Nguyen C....

The selected items to compare were different gap he...
متن کاملInvestigation of Unsteady Flow Fields for Flow Control Research by Means of Particle Image Velocimetry
Unsteady three-dimensional flow phenomena must be investigated and well understood to be able to design devices to control such complex flow phenomena in order to achieve the desired behavior of the flow and to assess their performance, even in harsh industrial environments. Experimental investigations for flow control research require measurement techniques capable to resolve the flow field wi...

The objective of this thesis was to increase our understanding of two-phase geophysical flows (e.g. debris flows) by providing velocity profiles in idealized laboratory avalanches. To that end, we developed a new experimental platformmade up of an inclined flume coupled to an imaging system to measure velocity in granular suspension. The inclined flume was 3.5 m long and 10 cm wide and could be...
